On Saturday, February 19, acclaimed Warhol biographer, art critic Blake Gopnik, and AAM Curator at Large, artist Monica Majoli, consider Warhol's relationship to intimacy in a wide-ranging discussion of the artist's life as it relates to his work. In this conversation, Warhol’s deep, complex bond with his mother, Julia Warhola—an early artistic inspiration and collaborator—will be weighed alongside his longing for Truman Capote and enduring relationships with men such as John Giorno, Jed Johnson, and Jon Gould. In Gopnik’s intensively researched book Warhol, published by Ecco in 2020, the established view of Warhol as sphinx-like, asexual, and impervious to social mores is debunked. Instead, a new Warhol emerges that is romantic, emotional, sociable, and avuncular—a stark contrast to the persona Warhol fabricated to amplify his flourishing career. Ultimately, how Warhol seized the mediated image to elicit strong feelings in the masses was borne of his need for contact and revealed his method of achieving it.
